Its taken 20 years, but Microsoft have finally decided to update their company logo. Of course in the past year or so we have seen redesigns to their logos for Office and not forgetting the metro-inspired (or no longer ‘Metro’ inspired, but Modern style inspired) Windows 8.
The new logo dare we say it is very metro – even though we shouldn’t be using that term. Its blocky, it uses the same Windows colours as previous designs featured, and this time replaces italicised text with a clean, modern looking Segoe based font.
General brand manager Jeff Hansen stated that the new logo is released in advance of one of the most “significant waves of product launches in Microsoft’s history.”
This year is going to be a busy one for Microsoft, with Windows 8, Windows Phone 8 and potential new Xbox services on the horizon they are hoping this modern logo fits in with their system of products and services and creates a cohesive look and feel. It is said to be a “new beginning” for Microsoft.
“Starting today, you’ll see the new Microsoft logo being used prominently. It will be used on Microsoft.com – the 10th most visited website in the world. It is in three of our Microsoft retail stores today (Boston, Seattle’s University Village and Bellevue, Wash.) and will shine brightly in all our stores over the next few months. It will sign off all of our television ads globally. And it will support our products across various forms of marketing. Fully implementing a change like this takes time, so there may be other instances where you will see the old logo being used for some time.” General Manager, Brand Strategy, Jeff Hansen.
